Sports prompts split players sharply. Fans of one sport know it deeply and everything else barely at all. That’s good news: whatever you follow closely is a private store of rare answers.
Separate the five kinds of sports answer
Before searching, decide which one the prompt wants:
- Sports and events: “Name an Olympic sport”, “Name a horse race”.
- Competitions: “Name a Grand Slam tournament”.
- Teams and clubs: “Name an NBA team, past or present”.
- People: “Name an F1 world champion”.
- Roles and rules: “Name a position in American football”, “Name a way to be out in cricket”.
Mixing these up is a common way to give a near-miss answer, like naming a player when the prompt wants a team.
Routes through sports categories
- Teams: go division by division or city by city, then think of cities that used to have a team. The Seattle SuperSonics, Hartford Whalers and Montreal Expos are classic “past” answers.
- Champions: go decade by decade. Everyone names the current star; few name the 1960s or 1970s champions.
- Olympic sports: think of sports that were in the Games once. Early Olympics included tug of war and rope climbing.
- Rules and positions: picture an actual game from kickoff to finish and name every role you see.

Use your geography
Sports popular in one region are rare picks everywhere else. Australians can mine AFL clubs, Brits and South Asians cricket, Americans the NFL and MLB, Europeans cycling and handball. If a prompt is global, a fact from your local sport is often the deepest answer in the room.
