Krillion music guide
Updated
Music prompts come in many shapes: name a song, a band, a rapper, a genre, an instrument, a musical. They share one problem: the chart-toppers everyone hears are the answers everyone types.
Read what kind of music answer is wanted
- Songs: check for limits like an artist, a decade, a chart record or a streaming milestone. A prompt like “a rap song with over 100 million streams” wants famous songs, so pick a classic many younger players won’t reach for, rather than a risky deep cut.
- Artists and bands: solo artist vs. band matters, and so does genre.
- Genres: subgenres are fair game and often rare: shoegaze, zydeco, highlife, city pop.
- Instruments: folk instruments from around the world are the richest seam.
Routes through music
- By era. Ask “what was big in 1985?” or “what did my parents play?” rather than “name a song”.
- By region. Every country has stars the rest of the world forgot: Eurovision winners, K-pop pioneers, Brazilian bossa nova, Afrobeats.
- By album, not hits. For an artist prompt, think of B-sides and album tracks you actually know.
- By film and TV. Soundtracks are full of songs people know but don’t name first.
- By instrument family. For instrument prompts, walk strings, woodwind, brass, percussion and keyboards, then add one region: the Swedish nyckelharpa, the Armenian duduk, the West African kora.
When safe beats rare
Song prompts often have a hidden bar: the song must be well known enough to qualify, such as a streaming threshold. A deep cut that doesn’t meet the bar is wrong, so here a less-played famous song beats an obscure favourite. See safe vs. rare answers.
