Longshot: NBA trivia from way downtown

Name an NBA MVP, a No. 1 pick or a Celtics legend, but skip the obvious one. Longshot deals 7 basketball prompts with 25 seconds each. Every correct answer scores, and the deeper the cut, the deeper the shot.

Our Longshot and the original Long Shot

Long Shot is a separate daily basketball trivia game from The Gravity Report: seven NBA prompts a day, 25 seconds each, and rare players count as long shots. If you searched for Long Shot hoops, you will find it under that name; this page is not that game and has no connection to it. Our Longshot is our own NBA game, a Krillion sports pack, and it is played only on this page.

How to play Longshot

  1. Press Begin descent for 7 random prompts from our bank of 37, or play today’s set, which is the same for everyone.
  2. Type a player, coach or team that fits before the 25-second clock runs out. Wrong answers are refused, and you can keep trying while the clock runs.
  3. Rarer correct answers score more, and every point takes you 10 m deeper.
  4. After the last prompt, open any prompt on the results screen to see every answer we accept.

Scoring: layups and deep threes

For “Name a winner of the NBA Most Valuable Player award”, Michael Jordan and LeBron James are Surface answers worth 10 points: everybody says them. Bob McAdoo is Abyssal and worth 100.

  1. 🌊 Surface10
  2. 🐟 Sunlit Zone30
  3. 🐠 Twilight Zone60
  4. 🦑 Midnight Zone85
  5. 🐙 Abyssal100

Where the prompts come from

Every prompt is a closed list taken from English Wikipedia’s NBA tables by a script, so the answers are the people and teams on record: award winners, scoring champions, No. 1 overall picks, career leaders, coaches, retired numbers, all-time teams and franchises. Award lists and career totals are as published when the pack was generated, and former team names are accepted. Rarity tiers come from how often each article is read and how many languages cover it.

Tips for deep threes

  • Skip the superstar. Jordan, LeBron and Kobe are layups on almost every list.
  • Go back in time. Winners from the 1950s to the 1970s are the deepest tiers.
  • Think role players. Sixth Man and Most Improved lists are full of names few people remember.
  • Keep a safe pick. If the clock is low, any correct answer beats running out of air.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the original Long Shot basketball game?

No. The original Long Shot is a separate daily NBA trivia game from The Gravity Report, where rarer players are shots from further out. We are not connected to it. The Longshot on this page is our own NBA game built on the same idea: name a correct answer, and the rarer it is, the more it scores.

What is Longshot?

Longshot is a free NBA trivia game on this page, a sports take on our Krillion Game. Each dive deals 7 prompts such as “Name a winner of the NBA Most Valuable Player award”, with 25 seconds for each. Any correct answer scores, and deep cuts score most.

Is there a Krillion sports or NBA version?

Longshot is ours: 37 NBA prompts with 1,063 accepted answers, scored the Krillion way. The Daily Dive and Unlimited on this site also mix in sports prompts on football, baseball, hockey and more.

How does Longshot score answers?

Answers are sorted into five tiers by how well known each player, coach or team is. A Surface answer scores 10 points and an Abyssal one 100. Every point takes you 10 m deeper, so a perfect dive reaches 7,000 m.

Where do the answers come from?

A script builds every prompt from English Wikipedia’s award, record and roster tables: MVPs, Rookies of the Year, scoring champions, No. 1 picks, career leaders, retired numbers, the 1992 Dream Team, the 50 and 75 greatest players, and every franchise. Rarity comes from how often each article is read and how many languages cover it.

Is there a daily Longshot?

Yes. Begin descent deals seven random prompts every time, and the link under it plays today’s set, the same seven prompts for everyone until the daily reset at 04:00 UTC.
