Farflung: a far-flung geography dive

Name a country that fits the clue, but not the one everybody names. Farflung deals 7 geography prompts with 25 seconds each, and every correct answer scores. The more far-flung your pick, the deeper you go.

Our Farflung and the original Farflung

The original Farflung is a separate daily geography game by its own makers: five prompts a day, a pin on the map for each, and rarer correct countries travel further. If you searched for the Farflung game, you will find it under that name; this page is not that game and has no connection to it. Our Farflung is our own geography game in the same spirit, with typed answers instead of a map, and it is played only on this page.

How to play Farflung

  1. Press Begin descent for 7 random prompts from our bank of 82, or play today’s set, which is the same for everyone.
  2. Type a country or capital that fits before the 25-second clock runs out. Wrong answers are refused, and you can try again while the clock runs.
  3. Rarer correct answers score more, and every point takes you 10 m deeper.
  4. After the last prompt, open any prompt on the results screen to see every answer we accept.

Scoring: the deeper the cut, the deeper the dive

Where the prompts come from

Every prompt is a closed list built by a script, so the answers are facts, not guesses: countries by region and subregion, land borders, landlocked countries, official languages, shared currencies, first letters, area and capital cities. The country list is the 193 UN member states plus Vatican City, from the open mledoze/countries dataset, with capitals from Wikidata and a few hand-checked corrections. Rarity tiers come from how often each place’s Wikipedia article is read and how many languages cover it, so “obvious” means obvious to most people, not to geography fans.

Tips for far-flung answers

  • Skip the first country. The one that comes to mind first is the one everyone types.
  • Think small. Microstates and island nations are almost always deep tiers.
  • Use the neighbours. For border and region prompts, picture the map and go round the edge.
  • Keep a safe pick. If the clock is low, any correct answer beats running out of air.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the original Farflung game?

No. The original Farflung is a separate daily geography game made by its own creators, where you pin countries on a map and rarer correct answers travel further. We are not connected to it. The Farflung on this page is our own geography game with the same love of unusual answers: you type a country or capital, and the less obvious it is, the deeper you dive.

What is Farflung?

Farflung is a free geography game on this page. Each dive deals 7 prompts such as “Name a landlocked country in Africa”, with 25 seconds for each. Any correct answer scores, but rare ones score far more.

How does Farflung score answers?

Answers are sorted into five tiers by how well known each country or city is. A Surface answer scores 10 points and an Abyssal one 100. Every point takes you 10 m deeper, so a perfect dive reaches 7,000 m.

Where do the answers come from?

The 82 prompts and 943 answers are generated by a script from the open mledoze/countries dataset (UN member states plus Vatican City), with capitals from Wikidata. Rarity comes from how often each place’s Wikipedia article is read and how many languages cover it.

Is there a daily Farflung?

Yes. Begin descent deals seven random prompts every time, and the link under it plays today’s set, the same seven prompts for everyone until the daily reset at 04:00 UTC.

Is Farflung part of the Daily Dive or Unlimited?

No. It is a separate game with its own prompt bank, and its best score and last results are saved separately from your Daily Dive, Unlimited and Noillirk records.
